Top ten gift guide for Valentine's Day

Whether you're experiencing the first flush of love or enjoying the adoration of your soul mate, we've put together our top ten gift guide for Valentine's Day. So don't let love pass you by on February 14th, start planning now to give your loved one Valentine's Day they'll remember forever.

1. Jewelry

Of course, to be in the number one spot, we don't just mean any old jewelry. We mean the ultimate item of jewelry for Valentine's Day, the diamond engagement ring.
While it might not be appropriate for every couple celebrating Valentine's Day, if you are considering proposing to your girlfriend (or boyfriend, for that matter) then Valentine's Day gives you the perfect excuse.
Take her out for a meal at your favorite restaurant and hide the ring in a glass of champagne (just make sure she sees it before she takes a swig!). Or suggest a romantic walk and pop the question along the way.

2. A romantic weekend to Paris

Or a romantic weekend anywhere for that matter! We're sure that whisking them off to New York, Prague, London or a secluded place in the country would be equally welcome. It's the fact that you're getting away together that really matters.
Wherever you go, just remember the little extra touches that will make it an unforgettable romantic getaway. Arrange with the hotel to have flowers, chocolates or champagne in the room for when you arrive. Do some research and book a restaurant for the first night so you don't end up wandering around for hours wondering where to go.

3. An experience day for two

If a weekend away is out of the budget, then surprise them with an experience day for two. Book something that they've always wanted to do, such as drive a Ferrari or jump out of a plane.
While the activities might not be romantic in themselves, the thought behind the gift and the fact that you've made their dream come true certainly is.

4. A pamper day for 2

We all deserve a little pampering every now and again. And Valentine's Day is the perfect excuse to treat yourself and your loved one to a relaxing pamper day.
Many hotels and spas offer a range of treatments so that you can make your day as relaxing and special as you want. If budgets permit, you could also throw in an evening meal and overnight stay to complete the night in style.

5. A romantic meal at your favorite restaurant

While it's a more traditional way to celebrate Valentine's Day, no Valentine's Day gift list would be complete without a romantic meal at your favorite restaurant. And if you don't have a favorite restaurant, why not book a table at a restaurant you've never been to before but have heard excellent reports about?
And don't forget, it's the little touches that make the evening extra-special. Book well in advance and request a table in a secluded corner. After all, a table near the kitchen with the waiters barging through the doors every two minutes can be anything but romantic. Order a bottle of their favorite wine or splash out on a bottle of champagne. If the restaurant has a hotel attached, why not extend the evening into an overnight stay?

6.An evening to yourself

If you and your wife or husband or partner have children, sometimes the most romantic thing you can do is to arrange for a relative or friend to have the kids overnight. Having an evening to yourselves to cuddle up in front of the fire can be utter bliss.
Even if you don't have kids, an evening in can be equally romantic. Cook a special meal for the two of you or, if you want a complete break, order a takeaway. Why not dress up as if you were going out to a restaurant?
Alternatively, you could just cuddle up on the sofa with a good bottle of wine and your favorite film.

7. Champagne and chocolates

It may not be the most original gift but we're sure that your loved one will still be impressed if you present them with a bottle of champagne and box of chocolates.
The presentation is the key to making this gift even more successful. Have them delivered to his or her house or make sure you wrap them beautifully before delivering them yourself.
If budgets allow, champagne and chocolates could be just part of the gift, which could include a romantic meal and overnight stay - or is that just wishful thinking on my part?

8. A huge bouquet of flowers

Again, flowers are a traditional gift on Valentine's Day and usually a very welcome one for the lady (or man) in your life. While a dozen red roses are usually hailed as the most romantic flowers to send, there are other ways to make your floral gift special.
Find out what her favorite flowers and colors are and instruct the florist to feature these in the bouquet. As well as having a special stone, the month in which you were born also has a special flower. Do some research and include the flower that relates to her (or his) birthday in the bouquet. We're sure that your loved one will be impressed not only by the flowers but by the effort you've made.

9. A single red rose or a balloon

Not everyone has an unlimited budget. A single red rose or a Valentine's Day balloon shouldn't break the bank.
What's more, if you get the presentation right, one red rose can be equally as romantic as a dozen. After all, it's the thought that counts.

10. A romantic walk

Okay, in the middle of February in this country, a romantic walk could well end up as a wet, windy and miserable trudge through the countryside. But the whole point of this gift is to get away and be by yourselves.

If the weather does permit, then a walk can be a great way to spend time together with no distractions other than the beauty of your surroundings. But it's worth having a backup plan in place,  Remember no matter how much money you spend on Valentine's gift, the important thing is the thought that goes with it. So, if you do nothing else this Valentine's Day, just remember to tell them that you love them!
